THE INKWELL STORY

INK: a little-known word for coffee, coined in 1582 by a German physician who, while traveling in Aleppo, described the foreign liquid as “black as ink”.

WELL: refers to the historic role of wells as the heart of a town - places where people gathered, connected, and built community - much like today’s favorite coffee shops.

In 2001, Jim and Angel moved from the Jersey Shore to Littleton, NH to raise their young family. They longed for a quiet place to slip away for a date, meet friends, or simply enjoy great coffee—but at the time, no such place existed. After years of waiting for someone else to fill that gap, they decided to do it themselves. They began dreaming of a coffeehouse designed to bring people together over exceptional coffee.

When it came time to name their venture, nostalgia struck. Jim and Angel remembered their first date at a quirky New Jersey coffeehouse called The Inkwell, where they fell in love over a piping-hot cappuccino. The name felt perfect. The Inkwell Coffeehouse was born—with a mission to recreate that same sense of connection in Littleton.

After months of planning and hard work, The Inkwell opened its doors in June 2017. While different from the funky Jersey location (which sadly closed after more than six decades), this space was warm, inviting, and rooted in community. With views of the breathtaking Ammonoosuc River, it quickly became a beloved gathering place for locals and visitors alike—whether to work, meet, or savor a peaceful moment with the perfect latte.

Driven by their passion for coffee and community, Jim and Angel expanded in December 2024, opening a second location in Exeter, NH. Now confidently in the hands of their son, Gabe, the mission remains the same: Building community, one cup at a time.

And if you happen to find love while sipping a cappuccino... well, we’d understand completely.

Here’s to drinking in every moment!

PS — Why the Dachshund logo?

Jim and Angel were proud dachshund owners for over 11 years and came to admire two of the breed’s defining traits: loyalty and stubbornness. Over time, those same qualities came to reflect the business itself. Thus, the tagline was born:

LOYAL TO COMMUNITY. STUBBORN ON QUALITY.
